Foundation at 50

Does anyone find foundation too much at 50 or over? I remember my mum stopped using it as she got older as she felt it didn't look the same on her so she started using just pressed powder over moisturiser and it suited her.
Now I'm 50 I do struggle more with getting my base right. Is the answer tinted moisturiser which gives little cover or a light powder or bronzer?

No advice to give on this but will be really interested in answers, I'm always a bit worried about this myself!0

Lisa Eldridge has just done a vid using a new Estee Lauder foundation that looks spot on for what you're looking for. Think it's only out at John Lewis now until it goes out to other stores in March. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIeEk9s_Tv011th Heaven prizes Number 103

I think I've suggested this to you before hun:), the best you thing you can do is buy a good quality high pigment foundation in the right colour for you and then customise it to suit whatever your skin is doing on any given day, for example you can mix it with a brightener if your feeling a bit dull one day, or a wrinkle filler or nothing at all if you need more coverage one day or extra moisturiser if you feel you want a sheer coverage - lots of products for the price of one that will be tailored to you and look great on your skin:)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0

I'm not in my 50's but my mum is and she wears Maxfactor second skin which she loves. I've also heard that Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser is a good one as it Maxfactor ageless elixir. There are loads of makeup brands that have released 'ageless' foundations designed for more mature skins. I've bought them and have noticed they are always super moisturising with light reflecting properties which I guess stops them settling in fine lines and wrinkles0

Thanks for your replies, do you think its worth investing in a more expensive foundation or tinted moisturiser?0

Hi Im 55 and ive only just started wearing it. It covers the imperfections on my face eg the odd sun spot. Up until now i just wore lip stick, now i wear foundation and lip stick and i find my face looks better all one shade. I have an Avon one and a body shop one.0

I had to change foundation completely a few years ago. Normal ones started showing up my new wrinkles, and the reflector ones were even worse
:(
Powdered mineral foundations are brilliant (but you must only load a little on the brush at a time) they look like you aren't wearing any but really do the job.0 -

Expensive isn't always best. I'd try a few. Lisa Eldridge (the most awesome makeup artist ever) says to go to the beauty counter with pots from muji and pump a few squirts of different foundations in and then give them a good road test at home. I always ask for testers or do this now as I have had so many disappointing foundations in the past.
Foundation is very personal as well - it depends on your skin tone and texture so what works for one might not work for another.
Regards foundation or tinted moisturiser...what sort of coverage do you need? If your skins clearish tinted moisturiser will probably be good but likewise there are some very light foundations that offer a tad more coverage if needed0 -

Thanks all for your replies. I have tried the powder mineral foundation but it seemed a bit chalky on me, which one is the best, I know that No7 have discontinued theirs.0 -
For daytime, I use a tinted day cream (Nivea) (as I've got older, the skin's got drier) and mix in a little foundation before applying (at the mo it's an Avon "everlasting") to give a bit more coverage - tinted moisturiser on it's own isn't enough for me! I find it to be slightly lighter (not in colour) than full foundation and easier/quicker to apply - just apply like moisturiser. All those I've bought with "reflectors" have been passed on to my 24 year old niece - I just don't think reflectors agree with older skin
(or maybe just my skin??). I also avoid concealers or bronzer with reflectors for the same reason - anything with a hint of sparkle just accentuates my wrinkles!
For evening (going out - not that I do much of that anymore
) I slap it on (just in case anyone's taking photos
). I love the L'Oreal Infallible but it has to be applied with a sponge, and I apply a light moisturier first. Then "set" with a light dusting of translucent powder. (This sounds like such a palaver - no wonder I don't go out much!! - it really takes next to no time though).
I agree with Bangton though - it all depends on your skin, how much coverage you need etc. Great idea to get samples, I've never tried that before! Thanks!0
