Free parking

Hi,
My name is Peter, Can anyone help and advise?
My wife parked in a shopping market car park which displayed she had an hour and a half time to stay there, any further time in this car park would result in a fine. My wife was over by 16 minutes. Since then she has recived a fine in the post of £40.00 to be paid in 2 weeks or it will rise to £70.00.

Is this legal, does she have to pay this fine, or am I in my right to ignore it and nothing more will happen?

Thanks, look forward to any advice or guidance on this.

Peter

Who exactly issued the ticket, and please don't give real names here if you can help it , as parking companies now have your full name if they happen to look here, so can you just edit your first post to say a driver of a vehicle has parked in supermarket.....
Excel Parking, MET Parking, Combined Parking Solutions, VP Parking Solutions, ANPR PC Ltd, & Roxburghe Debt Collectors. What do they all have in common?
They are all or have been suspended from accessing the DVLA database for gross misconduct!
Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?

Just ignore it, Peter, that's the standard advice. Don't enter into any form of contact or correspondence with them. If they don't get a response they MUST eventually go away, as to take the matter further they need to know who was driving, not who owns the car, and you are under no obligation to tell them no matter what lies they may tell to persuade you otherwise.

You will probably get a series of threatening letters, just remember the famous quote "full of sound and fury signifying nothing". Bin them all, don't be tempted to reply, a standard tactic (aside from threats) is to make deliberate inaccuracies to try to bait you into replying.

Good advice from Taffy above so either change your post or at least do not name the company (irrelevant anyway) or say where this happened as the "spies" are everywhere.

Sounds like a private car-park (owing to the figures), so it's safe enough to ignore.

If the paperwork says "parking charge notice" and making payment & appeals to a random PO Box of a company (ie not the council) than file in the draw called "scams"
