Zanussi Jetstream Washing Machine

HI, I've got a much loved Zanussi Jetstream Progress 1400 Washing machine and the Start/Pause button has been sticking a bit. My extended warranty ran out at the end of January and you've guessed it - the button is now sticking a lot so that it's really difficult to get it to start.
If I squirt some WD40 in it will it make it worse or fix the problem? Failing that does anyone know why it is doing it or what I should do about it.
