Trying to speed up a 1GB laptop runing Vista Home Basic.

This is the log after I've trawled through the list in the speed up thread.

Vista Home Basic seems to differ significantly in some places from the instructions in the thread, although it could be me. Any helpful suggestions please?

It won't speed it up but IE7 is very out of date. You can update to IE9 and even if, at some point, you prefer another browser this is still worthwhile.

Don't use IE, use Firefox. I think I'll probably move this laptop to Opera as I use that on my other laptop and find it very fast (this log is from my OH laptop).

    disable defender, google update

stop adobe speed launcher, welcome center, and sidebar (unless you need gadgets) running at startup using msconfig. Could probably run epson event manager manually as well, instead of automatically at startup

disable windows media player network config unless its needed.

Instructions were written for XP mainly, vista has a few bad design points compared to XP, especially the task scheduler.

Firefox can grab a lot of ram compared to IE

Is the Google Updater the O23 one? Only reason I ask is that I thought only the O4 ones were candidates for removal.

Also is the Windows Media Player the one listed under O4 as Windows Media Player" - can't see any mention of network config?

Laptop is already running a lot faster thanks.

I know what you mean about XP, I still run that on my desktop and couldn't bear to change.

o23's are services, and therefore running continually - google update comes with chrome, toolbar, google earth etc. If any of those are installed and not needed, easiest solution is to uninstall. If they are needed delete the google update scheduled task, and disable the google services using services.msc

media player - instructions depends on version - try media player, library, media sharing, or options media sharing, untick find and share media - it is this one O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WMPNSCFG] C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe

But Microsoft Updates does, also it's always up to date if you do need to use it.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Yes, I checked what osd_2.4 was and seems to be pertinent to the on-screen display. Think I'll leave that alone.
