Thanks all. I've emailed my OH's great aunt to ask how the fridge was paid for and whether it was in store or online. The people involved are elderly so I've a horrible feeling they are going to say cash in store!

Seeing it was being delivered to sheltered accomodation surely someone would have seen it being delivered, is there a warden for the sheltered accomodation?

What are the delivery company saying about it?

Usually you are informed what day a delivery will take place, what happened about that?
  • I'd be on the phone to the manager of the accommodation

Hi again, thanks for the further input.

It's as I feared, they paid in store with cash  What is it with the older generation and only using cash!

So it's going to have to be a good old fashioned letter-based saga. It gets worse, our relative emailed us a scan of the receipt and it appears that it was bought back in September  and this has been going on since then. I can only hope that the family have been pursuing this since then and haven't just taken no for an answer and not contacted Argos since.

I will find out as much detail as I can about what complaints the family have tried so far, to who, and what response they got exactly. It may be that I can't do anything to help but would like to at least try.

I can't believe someone signed for a flipping fridge that didn't belong to them.

    Dishonest scumbags.

If they've been trying to resolve it since Sep I wouldn't mess around any further with writing compaints. Send a letter before action to their legal department giving them x days to issue a refund. Otherwise file a small claims action at moneyclaim.gov

If it was as 'long' ago as that then the delivery people will have no recollection of exactly where the fridge was delivered.

However the original contract was with the vendor - DO NOT LET THEM FOB YOU OFF SAYING YOU HAVE TO CLAIM AGAINST THE DELIVERY COMPANY (if subcontracted).

As Arcon5 says - time to get serious with this...use my suggestion ^^^ for letter content but now include the phrase LETTER BEFORE ACTION

and/or contact your local paper along the lines of 'national company taking money off person with learning difficulties and losing their good and leaving them without a fridge'... this is JUST the sort of story the rags love!
Ring your relatives MP (number will be in phone book/online)
