The dealer has now attached a diagnostic device to measure consumption (and presumably things like throttle opening and gear used) for a week, the data will be sent to Ford for analysis and then we'll see what they have to say.

Update at last - following Ford's analysis of the diagnostic data the car went back to the dealer earlier this week, they did a software update and it is now averaging 65 mpg. My friend is now going to ask the dealer to make him an offer for the extra costs incurred in the 2000 miles that he drove before the problem was fixed. I'll just ask for grovelling apologies from those posters who were so sure that driving style was to blame :rotfl:

Nice to see a dealer who cares.

One other thing to ask though is the use of cruise control
(I assume its on the new one and was not on the old)
as he may find that he will get better mpg from 5th rather than 6th gear if going through roadwork 50mph areas, my Passat 140 TDI will average 65-70 mph in 5th but only 45-50 in 6th on the 50mph areas of the M62 (very hilly) whilst on cruise. thats on the computer but over a tankfull the actual matches up with the computer quite well.
