I updated to Firefox 10.0 earlier this week then when I went on my bank I noticed that the green Rapport symbol was missing from the right hand end of the browser address bar. That should have rung alarm bells but didn't !

Today I watched "Click" on BBC News channel which featured an item about online banking security. This prompted me to investigate further into whether Rapport was compatible with Firefox 10. On the Rapport support website I asked "Does Rapport support Firefox 10?". The automated answer came back that an updated version was now available which does support Firefox 10. This I promptly installed and rebooted PC. All is now well and up to date. The Rapport green symbol is back on the right of the address bar as expected when doing online banking.

Strange how Rapport doesn't flag up that it isn't working and needs a newer version when you update a browser. To me that is a serious security flaw....Has this affected anyone else?

  • I agree, it is much too easy to go banking and not realise Rapport has gone AWOL.
The problem is, I think, that it was still working, but your browser was not compatible.
If you had gone to Internet Explorer it would have been working as advertised.
Relying on the user noticing a green square is missing is not ideal, but I don't see how it can tell the user that the browser is incompatible.

I could easily have been in the same situation except it auto updated before Firefox 10 was released, though it didn't tell me it was updating and needed a reboot and, given my habit of using sleep for days on end, it could have been a week or more before I realised an update was available. When I did reboot, it told me it was updating then went silent. I had no idea if it had finished successfully or not.

It really needs to pop up a message that updates are available imo, and give update progress messages.
  • I assumed that Rapport had actually stopped working (and not just the green symbol missing) because when I looked at the activity report, there was nothing after the time when I updated Firefox and there should have been at least 6 instances to report when I checked.

It wasn't working with Firefox 10, but it was almost certainly still running and would have worked and reported those 6 things if you had used Internet Explorer.

Rapport help says "You can still have Rapport running even if most of your browsing is done using an unsupported browser. Rapport does not interfere with your browsing. You can always choose to switch to a supported browser when you log onto a sensitive website such as your online banking website."
That is exactly the situation you were in until you updated Rapport. The missing green icon is the only thing that would have told you though.
