Cutting carbs will send your body into ketosis. If you were to have a urine test your Nurse will see ketones, and it could make her think that you are suffering with ketoacidosis and cause her to advise a hospital visit.
.
From my research into LCHF and the potential risks for Type II, ketoacidosis was extremely low and far more of an issue for Type I Diabetics and strangely enough, slightly higher for black and hispanic people with Type II.
As Daksa mentions it requires a high blood sugar level and not enough insulin being produced. If you arent eating the types of foods that raise your blood sugar (carbs), and you are monitoring your blood sugar levels and they are kept within a healthy range, finding yourself in ketoacidosis as a Type II, would be extremely unfortunate indeed (although good to be aware of & one to discuss with medical teams)
I realise that by the time people develop Type II much of the damage is done and they need support, but it is a shame that the NHS are not very progressive and like to play things safe. I think there is a wealth of genuine medical information coming through now, that could benefit the millions of people with Type II without just sticking them on pills and keeping them permanently 'sick'. The fact it has been proven that it can be reversed entirely with diet alone (and not just LCHF but severely calorie controlled etc), means we fools not to empower people to help themselves, as the country's purse will not cope with the explosion of Type II diagnoses & associated costs that are headed our way on the back of the obesity crisis!!0 -

Hi Jim,
Well done for deciding to change your life!! You seem very motivated and as we all know, being motivated is half the battle.
There is a Low Carb Support thread here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1567335 which as well as support from others on similar diets there are loads of fabulous recipe ideas. Check out post 1 for Mercy's recipe list.
Keep up the good work xx0 -
To put the record straight, I didn't say that this diet would set off ketoacidosis.
I said that the presence of ketones in urine in someone who is in ketosis can be mistaken for diabetic ketoacidosis.
I know the difference between the two due to my OH and me doing the Atkins diet a few times.
Knew I should have spelled it out more simply. :rotfl:
Good luck anyway, Jim.Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage.0 -

No, you were quite clear. I'm sorry, I thought I'd acknowledged that with the reference to the risk of a nurse taking one result in isolation.:o
But at the same time I thought it worth making the effort to explain the fundamental difference between the two states. Certainly my diabetes nurse didn't bother to explain anything like that, I was just lucky that I already knew because of mum spending so many years on Cambridge.Eat food. Not too much. I went out for dinner last night and I thought I would try and have a carb free meal- God the chips and onion rings looked good! I had Tiger prawns on rocket to start, so far so good. For main I had bacon steaks, mushroom and asked for the lovely looking chips to be replaced with a salad- I did it!
I have now eaten in a restaurant and avoided temptation, although it was hard to watch my friend as she devoured pancakes with ice-cream and toffee sauce for desert as I played with ice in my diet coke.
That is now a whole seven days gone with absolutely no cheating, this time next week will be the first two weeks done and my first weigh in- I feel something spectacular coming along on the scales on Sunday morning.
My clothes are definitely looser, I don't think I'll be able to wear one pair of trousers by the weeks end as they are so loose now.0 -

Thanks Candy- Are you trying anything at the moment diet wise, or have you in the past?0

No, I'm on Metformin, and just low carb, but not drastically. Alot of diabetics are on the 600 calorie per day diet that lasts 8 weeks. Good luck to them and hope it works but wouldn't work for me.
Hope your diet works for you.
