After a few google searches, I've seen some links where batteries can be opened and the batteries inside replaced with high power rechargeable batteries.
Is this possible.
I have a sony vaio and replacement batteries are £50 plus.
Taking back to the shop is not an option as the laptop is over 3 years old

The short answer is No. Go to ebay and buy a replacement that will cost you less than £50. Average cost will be £20.0

Are you telling me that a cheap Chinese replacement is as good as genuine one?0 -

And sometimes no, to devastating effect. BOOM!0 -

Not always, but they can sometimes be as good.
About 3 years ago I needed a replacement battery for my Toshiba laptop and a genuine Toshiba one was £80+.
I got one from Hong Kong which was £32 delivered to my door. This battery would power the computer for about 2 1/2 hours, which was the same as the original, and when I got rid of the laptop about 8 months ago, the cheapo battery was still going and was still holding a charge.0 -
