Um, I have done very little research but AFAICT the PS3 can play video from it's HDD, usb, memory cards or discs. It can also stream to the PSP but it can't stream from a PC or any network device.
That goes for music too.
As for comapring products there *is* a good number of people who do - they make a list of features they want and search out the best deal. But there you have a problem.
For the overwhelming majority in this country DVD is still a newish thing and many have only switched from VHS in the last couple of years. Go down to your average town centre and ask 100 randomn people what blu-ray is and they'll guess it's a new pop group. Only a small %age have upgraded to HD TV's (which have only been pushed by the big companies for around a year). So most of the buyer's won't really care about the blu-ray drive. And of the few that do there will be a large number who think "I'll wait, see who wins (HD-DVD/Blu-Ray) and by that time I'll be able to pick up a player for £50".
*shrugs* Personally, I do not like the idea of buying all of my DVD collection again in HD - it just isn't *that* good.
As for the 360 being £250, forgive me - I was postulating a high street price drop based on the fact that you can already buy one for £235.
The point remains the same though. People see the first figure in any price first and often base their buying decisions on that. Why do you think every price ends in .99? They see the Wii and it's *one* hundred and 79 pounds. The 360 is *two* hundred and 79 pounds (or *one* hundred and 99 pounds for the core). The PS3 is *four* hundred and 25 pounds.
"Damn, 400 for a console? What's it made of, gold?"
TBH I think the 360 is at the upper limit (if not over) of what the average consumer will spend on a video games console.
There have been many items that were technically brilliant, a great idea, and fantastic to use that have failed because they simply cost too much. The PS3 won't fail because it is a playstation and that name has a big, big following. But it won't conquer all like the PS2. Not at that price.0 -
