Travel insurance to cover expensive items

Hi.

I have browsed this forum and can't yet see anyone else having asked this so I would be greatful if anyone has a suggestion / answer -

I am feeling swamped with all the insurance choices and websites out there and looking for anyone's knowledge or relevant experience please. Over the course of the next year, I will be making 4 trips overseas to North, South and central America. The longest will be for 120 days and I would like sandard travel cover but also cover for both my ipad2 and new digital SLR which will be coming with me I.e a higher single item / valuable item limit that a lot of companies offer as standard.

I can't seem to find a policy that meets this. So am considering doing a basic bare-bones single policy for each of these trips, And then having a seperte policy e.g. With protectmybubble to insure my camera and iPad worldwide which works about £100 per annum.

Has anyone done this/know it to be done?

Thanks

Try American Express My Essentials, I use them, although I'm not sure about 120 days cover.
  • Amex do cover a single item limit of £750 but that is also the total of their valuables (including electronics) is also £750.

In many cases you would look at your home insurance's personal possessions section to cover items, though the 120 days may be a challenge.

Alternatively speak to a good local broker

Suggest you contact a broker for an all risks policy for specified items - you should be able to get one, but may have to pay extra for the length of the trips.

There have been some negative posts recently about protectmy bubble so before you buy anything from them you might want to do a bit of research.

    Gadget and personal possessions cover

Start living the carefree lifestyle that comes with being a member of My Essentials. You and your family can now relax safe in the knowledge that all items up to a value of £250 are covered for loss, theft and accidental damage

And if you have any items that are valued up to £1,500, they too will be covered once you have registered them by calling 08000 22 43 55 or by completing the registration form enclosed.

What’s more, all of your items are covered worldwide for 90 days each year and if your mobile phone is stolen, we will also cover up to £2,000 of unauthorised usage.* The minimum total claim value is £50 and there is no excess to pay on claims.

Take a look at the range of items listed opposite that are covered - please remember to register any items you may have that are worth more than £250 with us as soon as possible.

*£500 for unauthorised usage on pay-as-you-go handsets.

It is true as was looking at Travel not Gadget insurance.

Whilst the gadget insurance is potentially better it has a 90 day cap where as the travel insurance has a 120 day cap. The OP stated they were going to be abroad for a maximum of 120 days.
  • You'll maybe need a sort of gap year / backpacker type of insurance to cover 120 days. 30, 60 and occasionally 90 days are the usual maximum durations.

There may be policies with 120 days or no maximum but I'd start with that criterion as you should be able to add insurance for the other items more easily than getting a longer duration.
