gifts for new parents?

hello :) hopefully is the right forum, apologies if it's not!

my brother & sister-in-law are about to become first time parents (probably in the next month, but the baby's pretty big already so they've been warned she might come earlier). they live in china, and i want to send them some surprise gifts. has anyone got any recommendations for what might be really appreciated? obviously because i'd be posting stuff to china it needs to be relatively light & can't be prohibited items. i know they'll be sorted for clothing, so all i've got so far is a taggie blanket & a mobile for the cot, and i'm thinking a little pamper package for the new mum. i'd really like to get my niece a nice charm bracelet with a baby-themed charm that i can add to over the years and they can keep forever and give to her when she's older (but this last one is proving pretty expensive :()

has anyone got any other ideas as to what would be really appreciated by new parents / that i can ship halfway across the world easily? i wanted to get a few baby bits & something each for mum & dad but i can't think of anything for a new dad!

    Congrats.

    My brother and SIL are expecting their first, I bought some bits and bobs, dresses, dummies, nail clippers, sponge, tights, booties, hand mits, hats and a pic frame (from eBay) 1st, 2nd scan and birth photo. Wrapped them all up, and sent off in a shoe box.

    Hope this helps..
  • Hi there

    I once visited friends when they were newly parents, and someone had bought them a set of mugs with 'daddy cool' and 'yummy mummy' on them, which I thought were really cool. I think they are sold in the likes of debenhams, but I think they should be reasonably easy to 'make' by buying the mugs and then stencilling/writing on the mugs with glass paint from a craft shop. Of course, mugs might not travel so well.

    Alternatively, what about a plater of paris mould kit.....for baby's feet/hands? I'm sure I've seen these that come with a frame to go on the wall.

    Hope you find an idea you can work with - you sound like you're going to be a fab and thoughtful aunty :)

    Jewelry? Seriously? Sheldon you are the most shallow, self-centered person I have ever met. Do you really think that another transparently-manipu... OH, IT'S A TIARA! A tiara; I have a tiara! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me!

    Hi, I was thinking along joint parent gifts.

    I have 2 ideas:

    Record book

    I thought this was a fab idea, a personalised print, I wanted to get one for my sister, but I didn't, I know she'd have loved it:

    Personalised print

    Obviously there are millions of record books, which range in price. It is sent internationally unframed, so postage costs would be a lot cheaper. I'm sure they'd be happy to frame it.

    I'm not into cutesy things, so I opted for these

    You know the old Haynes car manuals for different models of cars? they do a Haynes Baby manual - ie a baby help book aimed at dads if you are looking for something for him

  • How about a Mei Tai? They are a type of sling that can be used for baby up until about the age of 4 if desired. If you get a gender neutral colour then both mum and dad will be able to use it.

    When friends have babies I do them a box with various things in it like:
    • a newspaper from the day the baby was born;
    • a magazine from the relevant week/month so the baby can see what fashions etc were like when they were born or what cars were around or what films were out;
    • a copy of the no 1 single when the baby was born;
    • a few coins (as who knows what we'll all be using in 20+ years); plus anything else topical - some Olympic or Diamond Jubilee stuff for this year, for example.
    This can form a kind of a time capsule that the baby can look at as he or he grows up.

    It's always gone down well with everyone I've given it to.
