ALDI - best value dry foods to stock up on?

Hi everyone,

I have only discovered MSE in 2011 and have been very good at couponing and bulk buying etc, however that's largely due to mysupermarket and being able to compare...

Could anyone please pointme in the right direction of good things to buy in ALDI as I want to make good use of the £5 off £30 I got in the Sun yesterday :T

I know poppadums are a bargain in there and basmati rice but don't want £30 worth of those!!

My son eats shreddies by the tonne... any good ALDI alternative?

TIA :money:

Hi OldBill I would recommend all of Aldis Harvest Morn cereals. I know they do a shreddies version but haven't tried it. The cereals I have tried beat all the supermarket own brands and the wheat biscuits are the nearest to weetabix (that's what I eat by the shedload!:rotfl:)
In Martin's supermarket section there's a link to this brilliant site:
http://www.supermarketownbrandguide.co.uk/search.php?SearchString=&Search.x=70&Search.y=7&score=&price=0&pricevalue=0.00&aldi=1&table=all where someone has tasted and rated loads of products from all major supermarkets: you can search the site as well.
Particularly good quality/value stuff that I have found is the 99p jam, ground coffee, teabags, tomato puree, passata, bread such as pitta for freezing, pizzas (any variety),olives, flour, oils and vinegars, lentils, nuts, any of the cleaning and beauty products, honey, cereal bars, biscuits except the jaffas. When I wasnt veggie their tuna was good.
Stuff that I would stay away from is any of the tinned spaghetti, beans, cup a soups, tinned tomatoes are pretty standard but a little watery. Most of the tinned veg I've tried has been fine. went there with my coupon from the mirror on weds and its surprisingly easy to make the £30. hth and happy shopping!
  • I agree that the cereals I have tried have been excellent, muesli, weetabix lookie-likie (tried loads of own brands and only Aldis tastes right to me), lovely jams (esp cherry) and their own hot chocolate (instant sort) is lovely.

Unfortunately I cant get to Aldi anymore, but those are the things I miss most ;)

I am a new convert to Aldi as they have just built one down the road from me and I was very impressed with their prices and also the quality of the few things that I tried so far.

I agree about the olives and their salt and black pepper cashew nuts tasted great. Also their specially selected Scottish shortbread was very moreish- I demolished one packet in about 10 minutes- I confess to being a biscuit junky!

On the frozen side they do sea bass fillets for £2 which I am looking forward to trying.
I am watching with interest the comments of other moneysavers on this. Will definitely be trying the jam next time

Their chocolate digestives used to be great, but the last pack I had (in the new wrapper) didn't seem as good. Am I imagining things, or have they changed the recipe (for the worse)?

I grabbed a tin of the wild mushroom soup because I was hungry and heated it up while unpacking and was really good for tinned soup, very mushroomy.

i get their active yogurt which is basically the same as activia, its 99p for a pack of 4 as opposed to £1.79 for activia. Hubbie likes their cold meats, their pepperoni. Also like their smoothies, jams, pasta, isotonic drinks. Frozen foods good too.
