What colour is UK fuel duty paid diesel?

I ask because I just remembered, in India I saw them filling up a bus with blue diesel and when we brought back some cheap diesel from Ireland it was almost flourescent green

The 'green' diesel in ireland is diesel that has been allocated for farming use and has had no duty paid on it. The diesel has (green) dye put in it to distinguish it from normal 'white' (clear) It is illegal to use this in a road car.

Likewise the UK has 'red' diesel for farming use, which has red dye in it.
  • compared to petrol it has a more of a tint to it.

Which is strange as we bought it from a bona fide petrol station in Cork.....who just happened to be the cheapest....by a few cents. I tried googling an image of "green diesel" but could not find any to compare it with.

Some large companies are dyeing their diesel to prevent theft, a common colour is blue, see
    http://www.dieseldye.com/
I believe you can also get a special blend unique to your own company that can be spectrographicaly analysed and traced back to the company

VOSA may do the dipping of the tanks but all they do afterwards is call HMRC and temporarily hold the vehicle until HMRC get there - that's when you need to be worried as their powers are truly frightening.
