Just wanted to let everyone know that you can have your cake and eat it.
I took voluntary redundancy with Hewlett Packard after 13 years. My last day was 31st Jan. I applied for 10 jobs via recruiters, had 8 interviews and was offered a job with the NHS last week. I start on the 20th Feb so technically I was unemployed for only 3 weeks.
I hope this doesn't come across as boasting I just want to give a positive example that taking voluntary redundancy can be positive and there are better jobs out there!
Good luck to everyone considering taking the enormous scary step that is redundancy

Congrats GreenFly
I am in the same boat and landed on my feet tooMine wasn't voluntary but like you I'd been at my place for a long time (10 years), and personally I'd began to realise it was time I moved on anyway. After my 'at risk period' (effectively 1 month's notice of redundancy) I was only out of work for 2 weeks. I actually knew I had my new job 3 days after I was told the news by my old company (and no, I hadn't planned it, it was pure fluke that a friend knew what happened and told me about the job and I was quickly brought in for my interview 3 days after and knew there and then I had the job). What kept my start date back was actually credit checks and references
So, I walked away with some cash which helped pay off some debts, and feel rejuvinated at a new company with a new team
Well done you Greenfly xxApril 2021 Grocery Challenge 34.29 / 2500 -
well done shortie, you couldn't have planned it any better!
I just hope more people have the outcomes we had, there are a lot of good people that work hard and deserve abit of luck and for things to go there way
All the best for the future in your new career :-)
cheers

It can work!
I had been at my old place forever and was a bit nervous abut departing (20 years is a long time) but also wanted redundancy for lots of personal reasons.
I took some time off to spend with my small daughter, then started applying in earnest. Probably took me 6 weeks to find a role...it is good to know you are still employable after so many years in one company!
(I am a contractor and surprisingly after 3 months was asked if I wanted a permanent role, but it does not fit with my plans at the mo!)0
