common problem on a lot of cars, new resistor needed. probably about 30quid. the reason it works on the highest setting is because it is taking the full voltage from the battery. on all the other settings is passes through the resistor first to reduce it0

HI there.
I only really knew of this, as I sold my 2002 Astra to my mate a couple of years ago, it sat on his drive for a few months as he hadn't passed his test.
When he did pass and came to drive it, it had developed this problem.
He bought a new resistor pack off ebay, and got his dad that is quite handy with cars to fit it.
He said the job itself was easy enough, although it was a bit of a pain to access the parts to change.
As this was an Astra though it will be totally different, google the problem and re-fitting of it, if it looks simple enough then have a look on ebay for the parts and do it yourself. otherwise book into a small independant and ask them to do it.
I think as with a lot of jobs on cars, they are simple enough, it's just having confidence in yourself not to break anything or make anything worse! (speaking from experience, i changed the wiper motor on said Astra, when my previous experience was limited to checking the oil etc!)0
