eon what a joke

well where do i begin,,, to cut a long story short i was with eon then decided it was time to switch suppliers as i was able to, so i did, i stopped paying direct debit in october 2010 to eon, as i was well within credit, my new supplier took over in jan 11, i then get a bill from eon for £700 for gas!!!!! i rang them spoke to a nice lady who agreed that that was way to much as i was paying dd and i was in actual fact £260 in credit, so i never heard from them agian until oct11 when they started writing saying i owed £700, i wrote then a letter and explained this was not true , they wrote back saying you owe us £700 and were taking you to court!!! well i was rather confused to say the least, there was no court date time or place so i couldn't even attend, £700 is like a years gas bill!!! now what do i do im so fed up with this, i always paid the dd never missed a payment now im just worried and fed up,,, any ideas

Your mistake was stopping the direct debit before your final bill.

Doesn't help you now but that is what caused the problem.

In addition to the above - do you have all your meter readings from when E.ON took on your supply to when you left them? Ideally monthly reads?
Your post doesn't make any mention of readings, estimated or otherwise - my guess would be the £700 was a catch up bill for actual gas you had used, rather than estimated readings for the time you were with them.
  • hi there , yes i took meter readings and gave them to both suppliers,so not really sure what to do now all i know is £700 is not what i owe as i was in credit, i don't use that much gas as from previous suppliers bills, not sure where to go from here!!!

How do you know that? First thing first is to compare the opening reading on the new supplier's first bill and the closing reading on the E.ON final bill. The readings should be identical and be the reading you passed to the new supplier.

    Hi chelly1972

Already some good advice on here, particularly about meter readings. Thanks guys.

As jalexa says, make sure our closing readings match the opening readings used by your new supplier to start your account with them.

Were previous bills based on accurate readings or estimates? Was there a bill due when you stopped your Direct Debit payments in October 2010 or was the account up to date at this point and billed accurately?

Not sure from the dates posted but, theoretically, you could have missed four payments before the account transferred - October/November/December/January.

This was also a period of very cold weather so usage could have been higher than expected.

Sorry for all the questions chelly1972 but not sure where we're at from the info posted.
