Hello

MY DSD 20 is currently unemployed and gets JSA. I also have a DD15 and DSD 17 recently came to live with us, unfortunately she is currently sleeping on the sofa as we are now overcrowded.
Anyway, some of DSD's (the 20 Yr old) friends have rented a large house and have a spare room, they collect the keys on wednesday.
She's been offered the spare room for £200 PM.
I/We don't have much experience of benefits...could she get help to pay for this even though it's not a council property?
Is there any other help she could get?
How long might it take to sort out? and how do we go about applying?

Hope you can help.

I don't know much about it either but from what I've picked up on this forum I'd think she'd be entitled to LHA (Local Housing Allowance) at the shared accommodation rate for your area.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

She would need to be named on the council tax bill to get any help with that.

Council Tax Benefit can only be paid to those who are liable for council tax on a property.

In this case it sounds like she is renting a room off the tenants and therefore she is not liable for council tax , she would only be jointly liable for council tax with the others if she was a joint tenant.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

In many shared houses, the council tax is included in the rent; she needs to ask the LL or the other tenants if this is the case.

OP, just to clarify, we are all assuming this young woman has no savings, or savings of less than £6,000. Anything over that will reduce her entitlements, and over £16,000 she would not get anything.

This includes ISAs, inheritances that she may have received etc.
