How much does your car really cost you?

My car is 12 years old - 61000mls on the clock. I've had it for 9 years and get it serviced etc regularly. It cost me £1420 last year for everything -tax, comp insurance, servicing, petrol, MOT and repairs. I'd be cheaper getting the bus but I'll keep it as long as it goes because I like the independence it gives me. I love my car." The greatest wealth is to live content with little."

I have just bought my '51 plate Corsa SXi from my mum for a bargain £2,500.
It needs its first major service having done 30,000 miles - approx £200
Insurance for me and DH is £40.17 fully comp.
Petrol costs £35 every 4-6 weeks.
MOT I guess at £150.
Road tax - not sure - due July.DMP starts June 2012, £38,180.
Balance June 2015 £26,046 (paid off 32%)

I spend around £150 per month (inclusive everything) on my car.
Using a public transport would have been cheaper for me.
But still have the car because I love it and enjoy driving...
Not everything can be measured in terms of money...
I save money otherwise... like I don't smoke & don't drink...
So, justification of having car is entirely upto you...Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -

DontDoDebtKids wrote:A I can tell you exactly:
£1,880.00 Petrol (estimate based on filling up every week minus holidays)
£975.00 Car Servicing (estimate based on two services a year with problems)
£347.41 Car Insurance (exact)
£90.00 MOT (guesstimate based on last year)
£15.00 Parking (exact)
£175.00 Car Tax (exact)
Total: £3,482.41 per annum
I paid £1900 for it in August 2005 so that's 18 months so far, making it cost £105.50 a month to date if you spread the capital cost the car over the time I've owned it.
You forgot loss of interest on the capital outlay such as purchase price, insurance, MOT/servicing and RFL.0 -
£2728.00 Petrol (Super unleaded, runs like a dogs dinner on normal)
Just done £140 in Super in 3 days inc trip to scotland
£975.00 Car Servicing ( based on two services a year with problems)
£867.54 Car Insurance
£100 MOT
£00.00Parking
£175.00 Car Tax
£5-650 Tyres
Yes its bleeding expensive, but after using public transport for 10 years I discovered the joys of 4WD and a big turbo and roads like the A68.:j
If I had to give up my car it would be like losing my legs
Edit: I do get 40p a mile on business trips to offset some of the above0 -

Subaru Forester Turbo, with a few discreet mods
= 19-23 MPG!!!!!
brazilianwax You have the Mitsi FQ dont you, I can highly recommend a trip to scotland via the A68, you will love it, In yours, you will definately get all 4 wheels in the air!! Am due a payrise, and the Mitsi FQ is defo on the hitlist, does it attract much attention from the rozzers?, Its one of the reasons I like the Forester, looks like a normal estate.:D0 -
I sure do!
Actually, we spent Xmas in Scotland 'testing' the car in snow and ice and pretty isolated wiggly roads - awesome
As for the cops, South Wales Police have a FQ of their own. I am very careful about speed when I'm out and about on 'normal roads' so (touches wood) never been stopped or anything like that. There are some great roads for a blast in South Wales though, so we'll have a go there! Often see a few scoobies and evos down there too.
Most people are just surprised that I'm a girl!!!!:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:A
