For trains from manchester to windermere have a look at transpennine express trains. There are loads of youth hostels in the lakes but they get booked up very quickly, you can usualy get in ambleside YHA which is very good (more like a hotel) but is quite expensive as YHA's go (about £35-£40 for a twin room) Keswick has just had a load of money spent on it so should be nice. You could probably find B&B for not much more, depends what you like (I prefere YHA). There is a good bus network around the area, or cheap bike hire is available from the YHA. It will be very busy during easter but it is worth the effort. Happy Holidays.

    Thanks a lot everybody..

I will just have a look at all these options and will let you know...

EDIT: As mentioned earlier, flybe charges £150 (for two people return) Norwich > Manchester on these days.. saving lots of time..

    :(

Just checked the flybe website and flights on the days you are after are as detailed below

    Booking for 2 passengers
Airfare per Adult or Child £ 27.78 (per person)
Taxes and charges per Adult or Child £ 54.20 (per person)
Total amount of airfare and taxes due for 2 Adults £ 163.96 (total cost)

Depending on how much hanging about their is prior to the flight plus any travel time from manchester, as mentioned above, I personally am not swayed by the flight argument.

But what ever you decide have a great trip and enjoy yourselves.
