I downloaded avast antivirus following advice on this forum. I overlooked the fact that I had to register it and as I have my lovely Ipad now, I rarely switch on the PC. So today I discovered that my 30 free days ran out yesterday and the only options that seem available to me are to pay to upgrade. When I click on 'register now' it does nothing.
Can I uninstall, then reinstall and start from scratch - remembering to register this time of course!

If you register then surely you have a serial number of sorts, so I assume you can activate and register as it is now?0

Not sre what you originally downloaded, but there is a totally free version of Avast - download from here :
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
and choose the first of the three columns headed Free Antivirus.
I think you need to register it with them, but it is not a free for 30 days and then pay something - it's permanently free.
If I were you, I would uninstall wwhatever Avast software is on your computer at the moment and then download and install from the above site and register if it asks you to do so.0 -
The free version allows for free use, you just have to register the program (it is done yearly, but is free
)
Which version did you install?
When you open it, it should say the version at the top.
For info on registering the free version, see:

Basically it offers a 30 (20?) day trial of the full suite as the default option after install. You just need to make sure you select the free version and register that when first run after install. It's all done online (via the Avast application) so you don't even need to do anything special.
Download and run the Avast Uninstall Utility, then reinstall Avast and make sure you register the Free version.

Phew done! Thanks for your help. I followed your instructions but lead me straight back to where I was - unable to register. What I hadn't realised was that it coincided with an intermittent internal connection problem and it was this that was stopping me registering, not avast. But it's sorted (for now now anyway!) and at least I know I am protected. Thanks again.0
