Minor hassle if it gives you a virus-free PC?

Problem is we don't know if it a hardware or software problem or indeed a possible virus.

A format and fresh install will eliminate virus issue

If it is indeed hardware then it should be more obvious.

Just make sure Hilsbils that you don't bloat your PC with crapware
  • Thanks, its a fair point, and I must admit, I have been worrying about number of malware programmes Ive downloaded, but I dont like to give up and at the moment I am doing a scan with aswMBR as suggested by Waddler, and I will post the log. Strangely enough, when I got back into it after the last reboot, the graphics card had sorted itself out again.

What make & model of laptop?

    Any overheating issues?

    What antivirus are you using?

I'm not ruling out that it could be a possible hardware problem with yout graphics card.

MBAM full scan in safe mode did not find anything, Activescan only found cookies, Spybot nothing found, Housecall nothing found, doesn't mean there is nothing there though.

Have you tried a online scan with Hitman Pro (free for 30 days)?

Go to the above forum, read the FAQ threads at the top, then register and post that you need help. Then do as they tell you.
You will get some serious and dedicated help at the above forum.
They will try everything else first *before* telling to to wipe your drives and reinstall.

I agree, you've done enough, you're getting to the point of dimminishing returns. A pro would re-install at this point if not before.

My guess however is that it may be a hardware or driver issue, its unlikely to be overheating in a 6 month old lappie (modern cpu's don't run as hot as the older ones). A re-install is most likely to also fix any un-identied virus too - it only takes 5 mins to re-install MS Office!

When you re-install, make sure you have the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website too.

Malwareebytes support/help is likely to take many days as they are extremely busy at the mo....

I didn't get the option to click no to quickscan, so I put down to scan c:\ (was that right?) so far it has been 12 minutes
Sorry, I went to the football shortly after posting. From the drop down box there should have been the option (none) to choose.

Selecting this should have allowed aswMBR to complete it's short rootkit scan (1-2 mins), without the AV scan using Avast virus defs.

Selecting C:\ would scan the entire system drive - that would take some time.
