Memory foam mattress topper - depth query

  • We bought a memory foam topper ~20 months ago, for the same purpose: covering the ridge between two single mattresses. We bought a 6 cm topper from IKEA for about £150 (Sultan Tjaford, sorry can't post link!). 6 cm is just over 2 inches. IKEA specifies density as 50 kg/cu.m., but I have no idea how that compares to other manufacturers.

It does the job well, though due to the construction of the bed the ridge is still noticable (two sprung-slatted bases and two worn out latex mattresses of slightly different height).

What I found an equally important aspect was the hygiene aspect. As our mattresses came with the rented flat, it gave me peace of mind to have an extra layer between them and me. In our case with a machine-washable cover as well!

Regarding the depth: Personally, I'm happy with our 6cm topper, seems to be sufficient for our purposes and I don't think I'd like to sink in deeper than that.

I've never had problems with heat build-up, probably because I often feel too cold when I go to bad. I even use an electric blanket during the winter months without any problems of overheating, though I've read that that's supposed to somewhat reduce the supporting properties of the memory foam.
  • Thank you Macumba - that was incredibly helpful.
We've temporarily got our mattresses on the floor after previously using 2 single bases and it defintely makes a differnce not haveing the 2 bases as that does seem to have added to the ridge. I am going to make a single base so that proble should not re-occur.

I am leaning rowards the 2 inch foam topper now.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

Lidil stores have them in this week single size is £25 and kinsize is £35 I recall, we went in today to get one for hubby as I already have one its quite thick once out of the packaging (they had one open on display).

We didnt get one though in the end as I recalled having 2 singles wouldnt fit on our kingsize bed as they would be too big (odly enough) and overhang the side of the matteress. When this has happend to me in the past (eg when mine has moved over time) its made it more uncomfortable as dint get a good nights sleep, saying this though I have one as I have a degenerative back condition and the orthopedic matteress we got with our bed ended up being too hard, therefore I added softness and support with a matteress topper some years ago I think I got it from Ponden Mills or a similar shop back then. I think my topper is around 2 " and in 4 years hasnt got thinner with wear and comes with a cotton machine washable cover, which when I wash this I cover the topper with a childs duvet cover and add the fitted sheet over the topper to secure it in place, watch out though as in cold rooms this created static and an uncomfortable night for some, but this is temporary until the propper cover is returned. I also think you can purchase additional protective covers for them too ?

I am however considering giving hubby the extra tenner to upgrade to get the kingsize one from Lidil.

Failing that I will try the Silent Night ones currently on offer at Tesco / Tesco direct.

On the subject of getting too hot if my memory is correct there are now some that have 'pockets' built into them to allow air circulation to stay cooler whatever this means ??!

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks :)
Failure is only someone elses judgement.
Without change there would be no butterflies.
