What is a "subsidy password"

Motorola W377, locked to Virgin, put in different sim,(Lebara on the Vodaphone network), then put in a code, it then said "phone unlocked" but went on to ask for "subsidy password", what is a subsidy password?

It is now saying "contact service provider", would that be the different sim provider or Virgin?

Phone works OK when Virgin sim put back in, as does the Lebara sim when put into my unlocked Nokia.

Sounds like the phone is network locked. You will need to contact Virgin to get it unlocked, or possibly try a shop that does phone unlocking.
