Compaq laptop/PC World anyone had Problem?

We bought a Compaq Laptop on 28 November 2006, it broke down on 30 January 2007 (2 months later). Took it back to PC World expecting a replacement and was told that they'd have to send it away for repair. The hard drive was faulty, and I've now been waiting 15 days for it, with no sign of getting it back. Has anyone else had problems like these? I've complained till I'm blue in the face but get nowhere. Have emailed their customer service, but still waiting for a reply, and have also emailed Trading Standards, as I don't think the laptop was "fit for purpose". It's driving me mad having no PC at home too. Any advice welcome, thanks.

  • When I bought a PC from there before, it was faulty from start. I took it back to the shop and insisted on it being replaced, rather than fixed. If the PC is not working well at the beginning its unlikely a new build is going to fix it. Just ask for a replacement - they cant disagree

I argued with them for over an hour that I wanted a replacement but they wouldn't budge, I'll never buy anything there again, their customer care is non-existant. Thanks for the reply though.

I bought a laptop from PC World in October 2006 and it became faulty in Dec 2006.

It went away to get repaired and was returned back still faulty. Off it went again and after about 10 days I had heard nothing. Phoned them and got this really cheeky piece of work on the other end of the phone who just riled me

Ended up getting a manager to phone me back who explained that as it had taken more than 28 days to fix I was entitled to a new one :j

However, two weeks after this the courier company then delivered the original one again (this time fixed) and it is still sitting in the house ;)
Cheeky I know but their error. I am just waiting to see if they contact me about it.
  • If there are any independent computer shops near where you live, use them for repairs (obviously outwith any warranty). The people there are likely to be interested in computers and care about what they are doing, unlike the 'experts' at PC World who do not know their !!!!!s from their elbows.

When the PSU went in my trusty 3 year old computer, the one where I live replaced it for not much more than what the component on its own would have cost.

In light of problems with PC World, and also i have read that Currys,Dixons and Comet can be equally difficult regarding buying computers, where would you good folks recommend going? I need to replace mine soon and certainly don't want any false sales advice,or hassle should it go wrong. Is buying direct over the internet advisable ?
  • I bought a Toshiba Laptop from Dixons (now Currys) in Dec 2005. I paid £169 for 3 years warranty. The machine was fine for first few weeks but after that it stopped charging the battery. I noticed that the power port at the back of laptop got loose which later totally came off from the motherboard. I called Currys and they collected the laptop after 3 days of my call. It took 9 days to repair it.

After that repair I had to send my laptop 3 more times for the same problem. When I received the laptop after third attempt of repair it was full of scratches and marks, the Windows XP, Intel, Toshiba logo stickers were taken off and tried to stick back in a very unprofessional way. The sound drivers were uninstalled, and the problem with the battery and power port was still there. I could not believe that they can do such a nasty thing. I called Curry CS and they said its not their fault and I have to contact repair company. Well its not my responsibility to contact third parties. I called repair company who arranged another collection of laptop and promised to give me the new laptop if they cant fix the fault.

Long story short after waiting 12 days I received my old laptop back with new casing and new stickers on. Its working fine for the last 3 months.

Thanks Goodness I paid for 3 years cover otherwise I feel sorry for those people who buy stuff from these nasty and unprofessional retailers without paying extra for warranty.
:money: Doubling of debt equals ’stabilising this financial problem’. This new definition is very handy. Blood pressure doubled in 12 months? Don’t bother treating it, it’s stable! Tumour size doubled? Don’t worry about that cancelled op, your tumour’s stable! Think of the savings that can be made!:money:
  • I bought a laptop from Currys and when I switched it on it made a dreadful roar so had to switch off quickly. I tried another two times but the same thing happened. My wife and I were going on holiday the following day so I phoned the shop to report it and to tell them that I wanted a replacement when I returned. When we came back I took it in but they refused to give me a new one and said that it had to go to their repair shop. I went home and phoned trading standards and they told me to reject it so I phoned the shop and told them this. They said that they would send a courier for it so I put a letter with it saying that I did not want it and was rejecting it. What happened? They kept sending it back by courier week after week, saying that it had been repaired.---I had never used it. This was last March and the shop still has it. I contacted head office
three times before they answered---and they have just informed me that I must take back the original laptop---11 months old.
What can I do? It cost almost £1,000.
