If you make toad-in-the-hole you can cut down on the sausages and the batter will fill them up. Not especially healthy mind, but a bit cheaper. Think about the filler foods our grandparents used, e.g. a plate of bread and butter on the table with a meal. I think you may need the grocery thread too....
I find cutting up the sausages in to 5 bits per sausage and spreading them round in the batter means they lose count and think they've had more sausages than they really have - same with sausage casserole - chop em up and they aren't quite sure how many complete sausages they've had!
(OH moans if he gets less than four - but this way he definitely gets less than that but never realises!)working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
And as for choccy bars and things that need to be kept for lunches -they get hidden (in my wardrobe usually) and then distributed when needed.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0

My DH is much bigger than me and he's full after 2 sausages if it's with mash and veg.
Depends on the man doesn't it then? This one can eat 6, so unlike yours, and should not be treated like yours.
Happy compromise then - 4.
But I suppose as a family budget contributor he would also have a say in it. So what me and you think is irrelevant.
I was just offering my opinion, as that is what was being discussed.
I would be divorced I think if I tried to feed my man on 2 saussages. But then he would be divorced if he offered less then 1 big squeeze cuddle a day:-)) Every family is different.0 -

Oh I begun to feel a bit mean by hiding junk food and trying to optimize their consumption:D
Glad it's not just me then.
I realise very well that having none and making it an issue creates an issue in itself for later life (recently lived through scene where child who gets no sweets ever stole a packet of sweets at a party and was behaving like wild animal trying to protect it - no kidding), but also don't think that consuming it willy nilly is an answer also.
Just compromise.0 -
I am afraid I have to hide the teen favourites sometimes as they go through phases of nocturnal foraging which leads to heavy disappointments for the smaller ones who think they are getting a chocolate biscuit in there pack up to find the entire packet has been eaten by marauding teenagers......
Fraid my man would consider himself on starvation rations on 2 sausages but he gets swizzed by cutting them up and piling them in with cans of butter beans in a casserole........had to restrain him from getting through a steak pie for 4 when it was only 2 of us last night
Every Penny's a prisoner :T0 -

I wasn't getting at you, I was just saying that a man CAN live on only 2 sausages instead of 6, or even 4. My DH has a physical job working outside. If I gave him more than I do now he'd be even bigger than he is at the moment, and he's rather too large for comfort as it is (and not succeeding in losing any weight either)0 -
"Before going any further, I have to add that all bets are off if the household includes teenage boys. The UK Department of Health's Estimated Average Requirements call for a daily calorie intake of 1,940 calories per day for women and 2,550 for men. Teenage boys seem to need at least 5,000 or they start eating their own fingers." from Guardian article can a family of four be fed for £50 a week.MrsSD declutter medals 2023 🏅🏅🏅⭐⭐ 2025

DundeeDoll that's brilliant! And so accurate. To be honest the girls seem to need to eat every two hours, he needs to eat every four but about 8 times as much. It's exhausting.0

That's a bit 'one size fits all' though. It's important to work out your own base metabolic rate. If I ate 1,940 calories a day I'd put on weight - my base metabolic rate is 1,400, so 1,940 is another 1/3 on top of that. If a teenage boy ate 5,000 calories a day but was inactive then that's not good for him. Even a top athlete would struggle to eat that much food!0
