extra leg room for extra tall people?

hi all .. someone recently told me that if you are above a certain height then the airline has to legally give u a seat with "extra leg room".. does anyone know if there is any truth in this?

    Not a bit...

You're occasionally in with a chance if you book in near the end and they haven't flogged the seats.

Just like if you are overweight you get instantly upgraded to first class, or if there are no first class seats left they will give you two extras seats.

Come on pull the next one.

I'm 6ft 6 and have so much long-haul travel I have fine tuned the art of getting better leg room seats (which DOES NOT mean an upgrade! - emergency exit or aisle at the worst!). There is no obligation to provide anything. In fact if they believe your health will suffer, and you start making demands of better leg room seats they could (and it has happened) offload you to protect themselves!

    The simple two rules are:

1 - Check in REALLY early, like 4 hours prior to your flights to get the best possible chance of emergency exit (which do not get assigned at online check in) asking something along the lines of (whilst standing tall) 'due to my height is there any possibility of an emergency exit seat?' while smiling and being nice?

    2) - If you are travelling off season, book the really quiet flights. I.E If I book Malaysian Airlines, in a quiet month like May, I'll take the 10.50am flight as opposed to the 21.30 flight as I know it's less popular and I have a good chance of getting 3 seats to myself. This of course doesn't apply in July & August!
  • We always get the exit door seats but paying £15 per person each way. We like to check in as early as possible but normally they are still some available even if we have been queuing for an hour. Hubby has broad shoulders so normally the seats are just 2 together and not 3. The extra leg room is a bonus. The only downside is its bit colder by the door.

Why not ask them to close the door a bit?

I have seen this on the Ryanair website. Basically, if you consider yourself a bit "plump" then you can purchase an extra seat.

    http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/faqs.php?sect=spn&quest=large

Is this limited to "plump" people only, or can anyone do this ?

Now, if you are purchasing some of the really cheap flights (there are some up for a penny), does that mean the extra seat is also purchased for 1p - and also do you only then have to pay one lot of tax and all the other "extras". I bet there is some catch to doing this.

If so, that could be a cost efficient way to bag a bit more space - its always good if you can get three seats between the two of you, even if theres no extra legroom.
  • Ryanair operate a free-seating policy so you can sit where you like. If you purchase an extra seat how can you guarantee it'll be next to you? It's not as though you can refuse to let another passenger sit beside you by waiving an extra ticket around.
  • This is a great website for information about airplane seating, in-flight amenities and airline information.
It also states which seats have more leg room
