"Cheque by Return"?

Hi

Need to send someone a cheque but in correpondence, he asked for cheque by return. What does that mean?

Google'd it and found mention of it but no definition. Any help? THank you.

    Straight away perhaps!
  • It means post the cheque and he will do whatever it is your asking upon receiving it.

    .

It's short for 'by return of post'.

Goes back to the days when we all paid by cheque 'cos there were so few options.

I see. Still sounds weird to me.

Yeah, the recipient is a lot older than me. I'm 27 and never heard of it. Strange.

    Thanks all.

You've clearly never had a snotty demanding letter from HMRC etc. Going back many years .... it was a standard termination phrase.
