Where to go in Louisiana?

New Orleans, obviously, and we'll be there for a week next month. :j
But we have also hired a car for a few days and would like to see something else of the state of Louisiana. I was thinking of basing ourseleves at Lafayette (or Breaux Bridge) for a couple of nights. Does anyone know anything about this area? Would this be a good base for things like a swamp tour?
Any thoughts or advice on where to stay or what to do much appreciated.

Sorry, I've only done NO, but I was underwhelmed by it so I think getting out to see some more of the state is probably a good plan.0

First person I've ever heard say they did not like New Orleans! But yes, always good to get out of town.0

It may possibly be too far for you but we combined a New Orleans trip with a few days in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Small beach town with some casinos.
We enjoyed Biloxi.

Thanks for those 2 replies.
No-one else been to that part of the world???0 -
I went to Uni just down the road in Baton Rouge. All I can say is lucky you!
N'awlins is awesome but like most places in the world you need to scrape beneath the surface to see the real New Orleans. I havn't been back since Katrina, so i'm not sure how many of my stamping grounds have been destroyed.
I wouldn't necessarily say go to Baton Rouge unless there is a game on (which there won't be) - Lafayette is interesting for a couple of days, a bit odd, like Lake Charles (avoid) - but get into the swamps if you can!
Why not consider a little road trip for 2/4 nights?
Head up to Memphis, across to Houston, down to Pensecola (actually avoid Houston - no real point).
The casino's in NO are rather depressing (compared to Vegas) so wouldn't be in a hurry.
I want to give you some Cajun Trail recommendations, but cannot - I was as student so tended to do the non-touristy things with friends. This website might have a little but more info: http://www.louisianatravel.com/destinations0 -

You're right, everybody else that I know who has been there liked it! I felt that while the architecture was pretty, and I did the usual things like riding on the trams and going on a river boat, on the whole I felt the place was very fake, full of people trying to sell tourist tat, and a giant rip off. I had come straight from 2 weeks driving around Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico, where there were very few foreign tourists, so maybe it was just too much of a contrast.0 -
I absolutely love NOLA but only for the music although the food can be goodtravelover0
