Rights after purchase....

Today I went to Argos to purchase a sideboard to fit in an alcove in my living room. The width of the alcove was 83cm so I purchased a sideboard which is listed in the Argos catalogue as being 73cm wide. So I purchased and constructed the sideboard, only when I steped back I thought it looked bigger than 73cm, it is, it is 94cm wide. Obviously the unit is of no use to me so I emailed Argos who apologised and said they are aware of the misprint and I should have been made aware of this when I bought it. They said to take it back.

My point is, am I able to demand the cost of petrol etc in having to return something they have admitted was wrongly advertised? Not to mention the time spent building the unit etc.

If anyone knows if there is anything I can do about this other than just being out of pocket and time.

take it back and get your refund.
it was a genuine mistake. they cannot be held liable for events beyond their control.
ie
you may live 500 miles away. do you want them to refund your travel costs then?

I can't imagine you have any legal rights to anything other than a full refund. If you had bought it online you would have the postage refunded. If you had a different item in mind from Argos you could always ask for a discount for the inconvenience or maybe a voucher?

I imagine being a national company they will give you some vouchers if you moan enough
