No recovery disc supplied with laptop.

A m8 of mine bought a laptop for his boy for xmas. He had a problem with it not booting due to a system restore and a corrupt file. NTLDR.

I've asked him if he had the recovery disc or the XP disc and he said he did not get one when he got the laptop. I've had a look for him as I'm sure I read that the seller should supply a recovery disc for the laptop at the time of purchase. Now the only thing I can find is,

3. Is a hologram CD, DVD, or recovery media included?

Note: Genuine Windows software purchased with a new computer may come with recovery media. Recovery media is an installation disc used to restore your Microsoft software in case it fails. Your PC manufacturer should provide a means of recovering your genuine Microsoft software. This may include a hologram CD, DVD, or another form of media.

Now should Currys supply a recovery disc?? He rang them and they have said no it is up to him to make a bootable recovery disc when he first uses the laptop.

can anyone shed any light on what the situation is.

Cheers.

A few pc's Packard Bell in particular require you to burn your own recovery disc from a partition on the HDD when you first use it.

Yes - that is what happened with my laptop. The first time you switch it on I had to put a dvd in the drive and it made a recovery disk.

Have you got another xp disk that you can use?? Just do a new install and use the CDA that came with the laptop.

    That should work.

    Cheers Nigel. I'll tell him.

I actually took an XP disc down to him today and copied over the corrupt files, seems to have done the trick but for future reference I'll make sure he makes a recovery disc for himself.

It's a common thing with most notebooks that you have to make your own restore disk(s) and to be honest you have to be fairly obtuse to miss the messages that pop up until you do!

  • This is the thing, a pc manufactor has to include a recovery cd/dvd because many pc users aka end users dont have any idea how to create one and due to it crashing if you make a recovery cd/dvd that could have the same fault. Ask currys that they have to because the pc crashed and you are unable to get in there and due to them not including a recovery cd/dvd that they are not holding up to the sales of goods act.

A computer should come with a recovery cd/dvd so that the end user is able to reinstall the system if it fails.

Most new computers come with a utility built in that will make a bootable recovery DVD. My acer would not let me start my computer without pestering me about it. It usually comes stored on a hidden partition as well (well it does on mine.. although this resets it to pre backup DVD mode. If I use the recovery disk I dont have the option to make another one) I can access mine using norton ghost and reinstall from there.. As for the "must supply a recovery disk" argument.... They are supplying it and it is up to you to make it.. It is just like the argument that if you were given a CD/DVD to recover but lost it or broke it then they would not be under any obligation to replace/repair it.

Computers dont always come with a recovery CD/DVD as manufacturers are now finding it less expensive for the user to create a set of discs to restore the PC, Dell for example use a combination of keys to perform a factory restore and some HP PCs do have the create disk utility, so no If you didnt get a disc it doesnt mean you should have one but IMO thats a royal pain in the backside and you should phone up and get a restore CD if possible.
