Ignore him - his post is a bit ironic considering his only other post.

You have 2 choices - arrange to pay or report his threats to the police. Only you can decide.

Why did he give you the money in the first place?
  • to help me out, car hp etc, as i had just been made unemployed

Did anything provoke the 'Give me my money back' issue? Seems strange that a few years have passed since the 'gift/loan' was given.
  • nothing that i'm aware of...

Perhaps he thought you would only be unemployed for a short while and would have "returned the favour".

After being unemployed for years, he has probably got fed up with it.

We don't know what went on, or what is really going on but simple facts:

Even if he took you to Court (he can if he wishes), all you have to do is plead poverty to the Judge. Even if the Judge decides inhis favour, you will only be required to pay back at a rate you can afford.

Him winning is not guaranteed when you say "it was a gift", or "he paid me for some I did for him" or any other kind of sidestepping excuse. It's his word against yours.
  • is there any way of avoiding having to physically go to court?
    I am unemployed through disability/illness
  • Was he an ex-friend before or after he asked for his money back?

I have to say, I can't imagine being given £740 and not expecting to pay it back. Did he expressly say 'No mate, it's yours, you keep it'?

And as for not physically going to court, sorry, but that sounds like a cop out to me. It comes across that you don't want to face him and have to answer questions to the court.

As you've been advised, if the threats are violent, involve the police. If not, then offer token payments, even if that's only £2 a month.

So if your not working due to beng disabled are you getting any kind of benefits at all ? You could offer a token repayment eg £10 a month
