    -Long sleeved black shirt
    -Silver striped silk tie
    -Smart Trousers
    -Smart Shoes

Do the job? Or should the shirt be white :o

For an interview (whether described as "informal" or not), I would always go for a white shirt, plain-ish tie (i.e. not the Homer Simpson one your nan bought for you), black / navy trousers and black shoes.

I agree with the other comments that it is better to over dress than under dress.

Although the above sounds boring - you are going for a job and not a date !

Agree with Acc72. Things to do apart from dress correctly are to research the company (what do they do, where are they going, what would a placement there involve - do your homework!!) and make sure you come across as keen and clever. They want a student who will learn and improve quickly over the course of the placement.
  • Ok well will pick up a white shirt from Asda tomorrow. The black ones weren't in my size anyway!

Wow i'm so nervous.. it's kind of a dream job and location. The company is small and doesnt advertise placements but because I've been referred i'm hoping the informal interview goes smoothly!!!! I'm guessing they'll ask what I expect of pay and stuff if they've never done placements before!

So to help explain them I was going to bring some documents.. cv etc and placement documents, official ones from the university for employers...

However my university website is down atm!!!!! argh.. i need to stop panicking! lol

Why did all the earlier posters on this thread assume that the OP was a man? Everybody jumped in with their advice about trousers/ties without once asking his/her gender. Some of you are showing your prejeudices!

Any most importantly.... no matter what you wear, always keep eye contact, and have some questions pre thought up.... as they love it when you ask questions, makes it seem that your are geniunly interested.

Probably better if you actually ARE genuinely interested!

Personally I'd go business casual, shirt no tie with a smart jumper over the top, nice pair of jeans, casual shoes, well groomed and presented.

I think the trousers and jacket might be a little OTT for the occassion. But having said that I think that you could get away with wearing either, they said informal, so its not like they are going to judge you heavily on what you wear, however appearance and first impressions are a big thing.

I would definately recommend a collar and shoes, regardless of what you decide on.
