New washing machine, new noise + plumbing in problem

Hello everyone, thanks in advance for any help!!

We splurged out on a new washing machine. My bf connected it yesterday.

The new w/m's (Miele) waste pipe is wider than the old one (Hotpoint) was and so it doesn't just sit in the stand pipe as the old one did. My bf went to a local plumber's merchants hoping to buy an adaptor but for whatever reason (language difficulties, lack of technical knowledge, lack of part's existence!!) came away empty handed. He's managed a compromise solution but it causes a leak albeit outside our house so not too bad but we want to get it done properly. Any ideas of what adaptor we need?

When we finally ran it we became away of a new noise we hadn't previously experienced. My bf says it's when the w/m is rinsing. It's like a water gushing noise and happens several times per cycle each for 5 mins or so. Is it connected to the above or do some w/ms just make this noise and others don't. It's not from the w/m itself (which is in the utility room) but from within the house.

Sorry for stupid or badly phrased questions. All help welcomed.

what was the solution he came up with?
    ps
i fitted a john lewis machine last week and the waste pipe was larger than the old one. i just cut off the solid rubber end bit and then it went in the stand pipe easy.
    Get some gorm.

My washing machine makes all sorts of gushing noises - water gushing in when it's filling and gushing out again when it's emptying.

Modern machines may sense for themselves how much water they need (no need for a half-load button). On mine, it will start by using just a little water, then add more if it all gets absorbed by the clothes. This can happen several times if it's a full load.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Thanks, including for the proper terminolgy!! I'll ask him what he did and see if your solution would work for us. Only issue now is that even though I want it properly resolved the wm weighs a mammoth 96kg so keeping sliding it out to fiddle with the connections isn't easy!! I think we'll see if there's one of those slidey stands that will bear this weight.

I don't know, I'll ask him, but it definitely did as I saw the water outside before I got in and saw the wm had been fitted. It's related to the quick fix for the waste pipe issue is all I know.

Thanks, it does have that auto water sensor thing so that explains why there are the little bouts of filling. The unusual thing for us though, is that we can hear it in the main house rather than from the washing machine. I don't mean we can hear the noise of the washing machine from where it is in the utility room, I mean this noise is actually coming from the pipes in the house which it didn't before.

We have several things in our new house that we need a plumber for so we'll add this to the list and ask him/her when they're round!!
