All done on a one to one colleauge level rather than on any management basis. All now sorted out and apology recieved from a rather mortified individual

That is appreciated. Even the informal warning, if delivered in the context of workplace discipline would open you to a situation where the employer might have to recant, which would leave your position much weakened.....
