Advice on challenging a parking ticket

Could anyone please give me some advice on challenging a parking ticket? I received a ticket a couple of months ago and emailed the council to say that I had paid for parking at the time the ticket had been issued. I received an email this morning saying that although I had paid for parking, the payment was made at the wrong meter. The meter I paid at was virtually across the road from where my car was parked, maybe half a minutes walk up the road. I haven't been driving long and this was the first time I had ever paid for parking, so I crossed the road to speak to a traffic warden for advice on paying by phone and then payed at the nearest meter to where I was standing.
Can anyone advise me whether it is worth appealing? What are the chances I would win an appeal? Many thanks in advance.

I've had a ticket cancelled before for just this - The "wrong zone" meter was nearest and most visible, whilst the correct (and cheaper!) meter was away down the road, obscured by bushes.
I would certainly think it is worth taking further.

You'll need to provide full details, including posting up the full ticket.0
