2nd hand NTL box : would it work?

Hope this makes sense! We previously had NTL installed at our house, which we canceleld a while ago. NTL took over a year to collect the boxes, in which time we continued to use them, although you couldnt get the subscription channels we still received all the freebie channels, such as BBC1 etc. NTL eventually took the boxes away, but i was wondering , if we got hold of a second- hand box and plugged it in to the existing connection, would it work? Or would we need a veiwing card or something else?
Thanks

Why not just buy a freeview box.
You're Damned If You Do & You're Damned If You Don't.
  • First, 2nd Hand NTL box is Illegal, when you take out a contract with NTL you do not BUY the box like as if you was with Sky, but you RENT it, theirfore it is not yours to sell.

2nd, as far as i know you need a NTL card to view channels as this is what tells NTL what channels you are subscribed too. You may be able to receive SOME freeview channels but i cant confirm this.

    Hope this helps

  • Did think about Freeview, but we dont have an aerial fitted, and have tried an indoor aerial with no luck!

Didnt realise that 2nd hand Ntl boxes arent to be resold, was tempted to sell mine to be honest after a year of waiting for them to be collected but the man turned up eventually. Just trying to find a cheap way for the kids to watch TV upstairs as I am sick of the constant arguing over who watches what!
  • Regardless of the legality the box will need to be set up to work on the network in your area they are not just plug and play
Nothing to see here, move along.

I'm a disinterested party as cable has never been installed in our road, but nevertheless interested in the subject generally. What would be the situation with this type of item, of which there are many on eBay?
  • Those are legal to buy - you are buying the box, but if it does what I think it does you could be done for fraud.
