I think the simple answer is - because they can.

For some people buying something is about getting whatever it is as cheaply as possible, for others it's about getting what they want.

One of the things people often cite as a reason for avoiding Aple is price but they not the only expensive PC manufacturer.

When I was looking for a replacement laptop I set out with a list of things I wanted from it.

That list meant that the cost was in the £1000+ range and there are a lot of laptops in that range and all, except the MacBook Pro, are Windows laptops.
