Best price seed compost ?

Having said all the fussy stuff up above, this is the time of year when seeds planted maybe two years ago start to pop up. I have some 9cm pots sitting by the back door which have shrubs and small trees germinating in them, but after two years, you can imagine that their 'compost' is looking none too special! :rotfl:

If I think something is going to take a long time like this, I use a soil-based mix, again with lots of grit in it, because lighter material could simply wash & blow away. As soon as whatever it is comes up and looks strong enough, I remove it & pot carefully into something nicer.

Have any of you used insulation grade vermiculite? I heard its coarser and cheaper than what the garden nurserys sell, so makes a good bulker for the compost, any experience anyone?

hahahha, I was just thinking this this morning. I can get 100l of vermiculite for about £13 from CCF which beats the 10l for £8 in the local homebase!

Can I mix this with my compost?!

I havent tried it but have seen it suggested on another site, apparently some of the american sites suggest using agricultural grade vermiculite and people said that was the same grade as used for insulation here and they were using it without problems
