advice on double glazing for unusual windows

hi there,

My house is 80% double glazed with the exception of some very narrow windows and some porthole windows.

I assuming the previous owners held off from replacing the narrow windows as the glass area for a PVC window of that size would be incredibly narrow. Can anyone suggest what I can do with these?

Regarding the porthole windows I don't want to replace these - can I get a pane of glass put in behind them or something?

Cheers,
Huw

the narrow windows will not be a problem to replace with DG windows.
adding a pane of glass to the round ones is a pretty simple job.
    Get some gorm.
  • Shouldn't be a problem. My MIL has a two slotted windows like that on stairs and got replaced last year. I also have a round window and that had a double glazed panel in it the rest is still wood

    thanks for coming back.

I thought that PVC windows would have a much thicker boarder that then current metal ones.

Do you know if it's possible to get "thin" double glazed windows?

You can get wooden double glazing. Also aluminium framed windows which have much thinner frames than wood or plastic (not all of them need hardwood frames between the brick and the metal frame). The better aluminium frames have a thermal break so that the internal and external metal are not directly connected, they have a layer of strong plastic inside, so you have much less trouble with condensation on the frames.

    I love your portholes :)
You could even get a piece of perspex cut in that size?

Here's what I had done with my upstairs narrow window. It was expensive but it's so beautiful. The light throws across the walls, it's lovely.

there's something I haven't though of. Looks really good.
I'm not sure how well it would work for me though as those windows are facing a wall :-(
Any tips on where to get cheap double glazing? Should I ask around locally?

    yes, find a local man.
I only use Mark The Window now, he does all ours.
We only use Kevin The Paint to do our walls too :)
And Andy The Garage to do my car.
I've found loyalty works both ways and you get a better service.
