This Weekend London Attractions + Zones 1 and 2 Travel Card

Hi All

I'm off to London this weekend with my girlfriend.

Many of the deals and offers I've found so far all seem to be out of date but was wondering if anyone knew of any offers and deals for London attractions this weekend or in general?

To be honest, most of the places I've looked at are free. But Madame Tussauds, London Dungeon, Eye and Tower might be in with a shout.

If anyone knows of anything, let me know! we don't get out often and I'm a noob when it comes to these sorts of discounts so wouldn't know where to start. Internet seems to be a bit clogged on those search terms.

Shame it takes 5 working days to get the club card offer of £20 for £5 clubcard voucher as I have £6 voucher in my wallet!

Also, anyone know of zone 1 and 2 travel card discounts or the best place to buy them etc?

As I said, totally noob!

Many thanks
Mike

If you are coming in by train, or if you buy your travelcard at a mainline railway station so that it has the 'crows feet' symbol, then you can get 2-4-1 offers at many places - including the Eye and the Tower - by showing your train tickets and printing off the relevant voucher (or you can pick up booklets at some railways stations)

  • Thanks for the info.

I will be traveling to London from Oxford via car. A train ticket is around £100 return (not inc. travel card) for the both us. Whereas my diesel will get us there and back on £40, bit quicker getting there as we're going late Friday.

Just doesn't make sense to go via train if it's £60 more expensive!

When you say a main station? can I just buy a short journey without even using it?

    Cheers

I think what Pooh Sticks meant was if you bought your travelcard from somewhere like Paddington Station (or another station in London where trains come in to London from other parts of the country) then your Travelcard would be valid for the 2 for 1 offers that are on the link that Poohsticks had posted below.

I don't think it is valid with Travelcards that are bought in 'normal' London underground stations. It has to be from one like Paddington etc.

We did this last week and we bought the Travelcards from Paddington and they gave us a voucher book to use for the 2 for 1 offers.

Yes, that is exactly what P00hsticks meant.
Also, even at stations like Paddington, make sure it is the National Rail ticket office you buy from and not the Underground ticket office there.

OP, if you want formal confirmation of that, it is spelt out in the daysoutguide faqs.
  • Cool, thank you.

Could I buy them from local Railway Station? Didcot Parkway....?

If the ticket clerk knows how to do it, then yes. Depends on how well trained he is.

However the train fare is a lot cheaper than you think - an off peak return from Didcot (or Oxford) to Paddington is £24.90 a head. And assuming you are going Friday evening and coming back anytime on Sunday all trains are offpeak

I have been looking at that same price today!

Only problem I see with it is we would need a tube travel card for that day (+£14) to get from Paddington to Canada Water then a taxi or bus from there to the Hilton at Docklands.

Would you happen to know if it would be the same price buying from the ticket office at didcot? I wouldn't want to book a time for the outward journey as there is a high chance we'll miss it judging by my girlfriends place of work's time keeping....

    Cheers

Exactly the same price at Didcot station. Even if you book you are not committed to your reservation

And you wouldn't need a travelcard to get to Canada Water - a single fare is £4.30 if that's the only journey you are doing that evening
  • That's pretty good then!

    Thanks for your help!

Out of Madame Tussauds, London Dungeon, the Eye and the Tower, I'd pick the Eye. For any of them though, be prepared for long queues.

For transport, assuming you'll be on the tube and/or buses a fair bit over the weekend, get oyster cards as the fares are much cheaper (£2 off-peak for a zone 1-2 trip vs. £4.30 cash fare), they're also a daily cap so regardless of how much you use it during the day you won't be charged more than the price of a daily travelcard). They cost £5 which is refundable if you return the card + you need to top them up obviously. I think there are visitor Oyster cards available too - not sure how these work! Though obviously if you are after the 2-for-1 attraction discounts then it's travelcards as mentioned in the previous posts for you :p

Oh and check with the hotel about transport - I think they might have a shuttle service from/to Canada Water station
Now free from the incompetence of vodafail
