Options
My dad is doing a swim for charity and has bought a wetsuit for the event. Can he claim tax back for the goods?

Weirdest question of the year.....so far....but no
  • Really? Sorry :) Just that I have a friend who works for a charity and they pay less money for products bought through their organisation. So doesn't apply to individuals?

I think (but am prepared to be shot down in flames) that the charity has to be registered for VAT as a business - and charge VAT on its sales - for that to happen.

Which tax is he thinking of claiming back, VAT, Income tax, etc.?

That could be because that charity can reclaim VAT on their purchases. Or perhaps they can buy goods at 'charity' rates.
Not all charities are able to do this.

If your father is self employed and registered for VAT, perhaps his business could have bought the wetsuit and just let him use it for a charity event?

If your father is employed and pays income tax, he might have been able to gift aid money to the charity who could then use it to buy a wetsuit which could then be used by their fundraisers (like your dad) in charity swim events.

Ah I see - ok thank you.
