in Cutting tax
Hi,
I started working for a company through an agency about 5 months ago.
A few weeks ago the company took me on as a permanent member of staff.
This was all done very very quickly without me being asked to fill out a p46, or being given a p45 from the agency. (i still haven't been given one)
I got my first payslip from the company the other day, and my tax code says ''0T W1/M1''. Is this emergency tax?
I got 3 PAYE coding notices from the HMRC recently, where they keep issuing me different tax codes. On one of them, the 'notes' section says: ''we know you have another job''.
Im not sure what's going on and what im supposed to do.
Payroll girl for the company is off until next week.
I still haven't been given a P45 from the agecny.
When I get one, do I send it to the HMRC, or give it to the HR people at work?
Will I get tax money back from my time with the agency, being that it was my first job that year, and I was only there for a while so wouldn't have earnt that much money? If so , how do I go about this?

No. You will be paying 20% on everything ....... because you have neither provided a P45 nor a P46.I got 3 PAYE coding notices from the HMRC recently, where they keep issuing me different tax codes. On one of them, the 'notes' section says: ''we know you have another job''.
Im not sure what's going on and what im supposed to do.
One assumes for 2012-13? Are they all for the same job? When I get one, do I send it to the HMRC, or give it to the HR people at work?
As it says on the P45 - to the new employer. Will I get tax money back from my time with the agency, being that it was my first job that year, and I was only there for a while so wouldn't have earnt that much money?
Can't answer that without a lot more detail. If you pass on the P45 - and it has a cumulative Code on it (eg 747L) - then that should resolve any overpayment through your pay. Getting the P45 is - therefore - fairly significant? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
thank Mikeyorks.
Yes, getting the P45 is what I need to do first I guess, although Im not sure how to hurry them up. I've asked a few times. Maybe I should grab whoever deals with it by the throat.
So, when I get one, will any tax that i'm over paying now get refunded back to me? In my wages, or via a cheque from HRMC?
Also, will giving the P45 to the HR people at the company mean that any money I MAY be due from the agency (as it was my first job that year and I didn't earn a great amount of money and so maybe shouldn't have paid tax) will get back to me automatically or will I still need to do something else?0 -
What is your code number on the last payslip from the agency? If that is a cumulative one (eg ends in 'L' and with no 'M1' or 'Month 1' following it) then that should be on the P45. And any overpaid tax from the agency and from the '0T' should automatically be via your pay as soon as your new HR processes the P45.
But you do need to get all that sorted before the last pay day in the year - ie end March. Otherwise you need to wait for your P60 .... then get HMRC to refund anything owed.
If the 3 x codes you mentioned are for 12-13? Then getting the P45 sorted out should also help any HMRC confusion that's given rise to that.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
My last payslip from the agency before being employed directly by the company says ''747L W''. That is the same code though that is on all of my paysilps from the agency.
as for the codes that HRMC keep sending me.
I cant find the letter from last week, but the two letters I got sent today both say ''PAYE coding notice tax code for the year 2011-2012''
One says my new tax code for the year 6 april 2011 to 5 April 2012 is 667L, the other letter says same thing but with tax code 91T0 -

If there is no '1' after that .... then I'll assume the agency payroll put a 'W' (weekly) or 'M' (monthly) after all Codes and then drop a space in where it's cumulative. So that should go on the P45 and any refund due should be made when your current payroll process it.
However :but the two letters I got sent today both say ''PAYE coding notice tax code for the year 2011-2012''

...... that suggests HMRC are of the impression, presumably from the agency, that you have 2 x concurrent jobs and they are splitting the allowance. The Coding Notices should amplify that a bit and suggest which job is which? You need to ring HMRC and try to resolve it - the 'phones should be quieter now we're past the 31st Jan SA deadline. What you don't want is the agency picking up the lower of those Codes and sticking it on the P45. They shouldn't do that .... but agencies do tend to be a bit of a law unto themselves. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
I finally got my P45 from the agency.
says: -
Tax code at leaving date: 747L
Gave it to the HR guy at work.
Does this mean that the HRMC will soon realise that I don't (and never did) have 2 jobs and i'll be on a normal tax code again when I get paid at the end of the month?
Also, it says: total pay in this employment £3600
It was my first job in 2011 when I started it in October.
Since I won't have earnt much money in the year will I get the tax I have paid given back to me?
When am I able to ask for it and how do I do it, or does it all happen automatically?0 -
Is the £3600 in section 7 or 8 of the P45?0

Earnings in section 8 and I assume section 7 is blank means that this code is on a week1/month1 basis, so there will be no adjustment to tax allready paid yet, though once the P45 is opperated by your new employer it will reduce the tax you pay each month. You will now not be taxed on the first £623 you earn each month. Any tax due back will not be paid untill full tax details come from the tax office for your new employer.
I would suggest contacting the tax office certainly to sort out the tax codes so they realise that you only have one job, and also cannot hurt to try to speed up issuing a cumulative code to your employer which will sort out your tax.0
