Areas of Newport

Hi,

My OH and I are relocating to Newport. We are looking at Duffryn/Risca/Rogerstone and Bassaleg as areas. We've heard good things about the last three, but someone told us Duffryn isn't as nice.

Opinions welcome on these areas, or other areas in Newport.

If it helps, there is just us, but children planned in the next few years and we need to stay in the Newport area as its equidistant to our places of work which are in opposite directions.

Many thanks x

Hi, Duffryn has a bad name due to the large council estate, there are now some very nice private housing estates in Duffryn but local schools could be an issue if you planning children. I have lived in one of the private estates in the Duffryn area for 17 years now and where I am is very quiet, my daughter goes to the Catholic school I teach in so I didn't have the worry of having to send her to Duffryn infants and juniors or Duffryn comp.

In my opinion Risca isn't any better an area than Duffryn.

Bassaleg has a good reputation and good schools as does, Marshfield and Langstone, Rogerstone is quite nice too - depends on your budget for renting or buying in the area.

TBH I am surprised anyone wants to move to newport after the tv programme Bouncers the other night, it had the opposite affect on me, I started looking for teaching jobs in England, lol.

I'm originally from Newport. St Julians in fact.

Areas include Alway, Ringland, LLIswerry, Malpas, Crindau, Bettws, St Julians, Maindee, Pill, Duffryn and others I've forgotten.

Personally I wouldn't include Risca, Rogerstone, Bassaleg as Newport. But I see where it comes from. If you do include those areas then you probably should include Caerleon as well. I lived on Caerleon Road for 30 odd years. My brother still lives in Pill and my niece on Cardiff Road.

Parts of Ringland I would stay away from. People knock Pill but my sister in law claims that its the safest part of Newport. I suppose she would. She grew up there. I would imagine that to move to Bassaleg or Langstone would require serious money to buy or rent for that matter.

I'd have a look at Caerleon. Close to the motorway as well.

Parts of Caerleon are nice but then again the nice parts are expensive and has some very good schools. Caerleon road sort of leads towards Caerleon but isn't really the nice part of Caerleon. Ponthir is quite quiet. I believe Malpas is quite nice in parts, Lliswerry/Somerton is pretty rough in parts as is the council part of st.julians.

From experience of working in the area and having relatives living in the area Pill is by far the roughest part of Newport.

Whereabouts will your places of work be, might be better to live near one of work and the other person commute further. When you have children in school it will be easier to live and work fairly close to the school.

I used to live on Caerleon Road across from Haisbro Avenue/Moorings.

Moorings could be nice to live. Where in St Julians were you?
