seed potato storage

Is it too cold to store seed potatoes in a garage where the temperature occasionally drops to 4 deg C during the night.

Sometimes during the day as well:eek:

I keep mine on a north facing cold window, they shouldn't have to much sunlight, but not darkness, which will make the chits get long and spindly.
And they shouldn't be kept in freezing temps, apart from that, they should be ok.

I do the same as Lotus Eater. North facing frost free window = healthy compact chits rather than leggy ones.

I don't have any north facing windows, only east and west.

Nor do I have any cold rooms

21 deg C during the day and drops to 14 deg C during the night.

Only colder place than that is my garage which is unheated.

If you're sure the garage temperature stays above freezing even at night then it's fine. Put the spuds in a single layer in egg trays or boxes to chit, or seed trays, and place these trays on a layer of cardboard or polystyrene packagibg on a shelf or box above floor level. Don't leave them on a concrete floor as this is the coldest place. And give them as much light as possible....not full sunlight of course, but that shouldn't be a problem at this time of year.
