Had exactly this problem back in early Sept 06. Asked the same question on here and got some great help. Took a while but got there in the end! I think it's all to do with 'taking ownership' of the drive. I'll try and find the thread and post the link.

In Windows Explorer? Properties didn't have 'security' it did have 'attributes' which says read only for all folders on the computer
Yes, in Windows Explorer. If XP Home you have to boot into Safe Mode to see the Security tab. If XP Pro, disable Simple File Sharing. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
  • If your PC is identical, then you could attach the iffy HD as a master, and burn stuff off, rather than changing file security attributes.

If the computer is identical try swapping the drive and see if it will boot from it. You can then copy all your files to a flash drive.

So maybe I should have said similar not identical sorry (they are both similar sized Dells so have same connections inside but different make hard drives)
I guess you've been sipping the same wine as me albertross? :D. Still I'm snookered on this one too. Always been able to access a slaved HDD that wasn't goosed before.

Beginning to suspect it's a HDD failure. OP will be lucky to recover any data at all.

I have a Fujitsu drive that I keep as a £100 paperweight to remind me never to buy that brand again. :(
  • Avoid IBM/Hitachi Travelstar's as well.

My fav is Maxtor. I always use them if possible followed by Seagate (same Co., now) warranty and returns policy is the best. I've only had 1 Hitachi and it failed but had no prob with replacement.
  • Have seen quite a few Maxtor's 3.5's go as well.
