Dealing with Scottish Power

Hello,
I recently moved into a 1 bed flat and and my gas and electricity is provided by Scottish power as part of their dual fuel online DD plan.
I took a gas reading on the day I got in 02/12/11, one on the 14/01/2012 and one on 29/01/12. All was going well until the last reading gave me a bill of over £1200. I phoned them up and they said this large bill was down to the fact that the place had not been lived in for a few years and so they billed me for £460 and sent the remainder for to the Landlord.
I said to them my bill can't possibly be that high. It is a small one bed flat, I work 9-5 and only use the heating for about 30 mins in the morning and 1 hour at night. On top of that I'm usually out on the weekends and spent last week in London with work.
They wouldn't have none of it so we left it at that. I rang them again today after having a few days to calm down. They again persisted in telling me it was correct, I gave them a new reading and was put on hold. When the woman got back to me she said we will look into it and put something in the post which she said will probably be a new bill.
I don't have much confidence to be fair and would like to gauge other peoples opinions on the matter. My electricity bill is spot on, about £30 a month. Looking at my most recent bill there are 2 charges, a primary and a secondary. On the electricity side they took the primary but on the gas side they took the secondary. the primary one looks far more realistic at £21.45 but they went for the £350+ one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forget £s, it tells us nothing. Please tell us your actual kWh consumption. How many kWh are you being billed for, and over how many days? Does the biling period commence correctly (2/12/11)?
Both first and second tier charges are added together to calculate your bill.
What were the opening and closing readings?
Is your gas meter metric or imperial (it''s marked on the meter), and does this match the conversion on your bill?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Hi ollyprice87,
