Can you explain a bit more , what does travel insurance have to do with marriage separation?

  • Probably there is no difference.
  • You'd have to read every policy to check but I strongly suspect no. Checking the John Lewis policy, they wouldnt cover this.

You ultimately could claim at any point that you've separated and so cancelled but then made it back up again afterwards and there'd be little/no proof against it.
  • A friend has left her husband, and moved out of their home, she can now no longer afford a holiday that she has had booked for some time, due to moving into her own place, I told her hard lines basically and I didn't think she would be covered, but just wondered if anyone knew any different or had any experience of this

It would be very easy to "pretend" to separate in order to make a claim.

I strongly suspect this is not covered.
The problem is that anyone could pretend they've split up so it would very open to fraud.
Disinclination is not normally covered for this reason.

Has she checked the cancellation terms and conditions?
These normally go from loss of deposit -> 100% loss on a sliding scale depending on the notice period.
She should first check this as it might be that she only loses the deposit.

Secondly who actually made the booking?
I believe if she made the booking for both people she is liable for it.
If her husband made the booking he is liable.

If it's a long way in the future she would just have to cancel and lose the deposit.
If it's shorter term, then her best bet would be to sell on the holiday. Even if she sells if half price then she willl experience a 50% loss rather than 100%, but she shoudl first check whether she can tranfer the names on the booking before selling it on. There is often a charge for changing names.
