Stiched up at work

Hope this is in the right section as this is my first post on the forum.

Anyway I work at my local Asda store. Last year they had a competition for there staff. Basically if you didn't go sick for a period of twelve moths you would be entered into a draw to win a brand new Ford KA (worth about £6000). Well the draw never took place because they are saying that the garage that was going to give the car pulled out. They have offered an alternative prize of a weekend for two in a health spa or holiday camp. Neither of these prizes are worth £6000. Management are saying that there is nothing they can do about the car and we have to accept the new prize.
Can they legally do this. On the posters they had advertising the car there was no wording like subject to availability etc. I have spoken to solicitor about this matter and he said that alternate prize should be to the same value as original prize. Is it worth taking my employer to tribunaral over this matter.

    What's the point?

What are you going to gain from it, unless you know for a fact you are going to win the prize?

out of 300 staff there were only around 30 of us left in the draw so my odds of winning are pretty good. Plus i wouldn't be doing for myself but for eveyone in the draw.

I have been advised by head office to raise a greivance with store management about this but has they are the ones dealing with it, i dont think it will get very far.

    Are you in a union?

Were you given any terms & conditions of the competition? Normqally these would state that if the prize was unavailable something of similar value would be
    provided.

Any one brave enough to bring this to the attention of the local press?
Thanks to all who post comps :A :T

It would be nice if one of the 30 of you who stand to lose out was able to contact the local paper and let them know the story, off the record. They'd need to see at least the original poster/advert so they could check the facts.
If the store manager had any sense, s/he would reinstate the car prize rather than get continued bad publicity.
Whatever happens, I hope all of you get a reward for a sick-free year. :)

    sue them,go for it .
Then when the management start to give you the crappy jobs, go off work with stress and sue them for that.
On your way to the doctors trip over a paving stone and fall over ,sue the council for that.
At the hospital getting your toe fixed the x ray dept will probably be full of people with whiplash "injuries" so you may have to wait.If you think the wait is to long ,sue the nhs.
Then when you get paid out and your sat in your chair at home watching your plasma paid for with your claim money .call dominos for a pizza if it is late or cold sue them ,sue the lad who delivered it as well.
Why should you get a "reward" for not being "ill".
You need to have a think about where you are going in life.

I think you missed the point!!

They were offered a prize(does it really matter what for?) and it was withdrawn,a really s****y thing to do IMO.
Management should be embarrassed into doing something, by publicity.
