I applied for a part time job recently in a store a few minutes away, went for an interview the other day and they drop the bomb that training is in a store 20 miles away, Now I don't drive and public transport in my village consists of 1 bus a day leaving my village at 1.30pm, So my options would be taxi back and forward for 5 weeks at £1 per mile = £40 per day do this 5 days a week you see the issue. I need to know because they said they will let me know by the end of the week so I need to know what to say if successful, I wouldnt want to loss JSA

  • This is a barrier to employment. So ask your Job Centre adviser about the Flexible Support Fund.
They might be able to help with taxi fares for the duration of your training, might depend on whether they class it as full time or part time work though.

You are not forced to take a job where you will be worse off. Could you cycle to a local town to get a bus that runs more often?

Hardly practical with a wife and 3 kids.
  • I think the B&B idea is worth looking into. You could come home at weekends and it's only for 5 weeks.

    I'll only be earning £100 a week.
  • yes, i think asking the question would help Falko,

I'm sure most would agree that the outlay for 5 weeks would be worth it,

    Good luck

I have an OH and 3 children and I would not see that as a bar to staying away for a few nights if it meant I was bettering my future. I do still work away for my job as I'm sure many do here.

It is all part and parcel of working, and you may well be faced with a similar situation once you start any job , but look on it as a short bit of something you don't like, but for a greater gain.

Unfortunately the days where we all got up and walked down the road to our office or factory are long gone and sometimes some real effort is required to get or keep a job.

5 weeks training for a store job? what sort of store is it? are you sure you didn't mishear and it's 5 days?
Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.
